Anal fissure affects men and women alike. It is the most common cause of rectal bleeding in infants and children. Fissure or cut in the anus accounts for 6 to 15 percent of the visits to a colorectal surgeon.

There are various remedies for anal fissures and among the most common are Polysporin and Neosporin.

Polysporin is a medication intended for topical use. It is an antibiotic used for treating and preventing minor cuts and wounds such as scrapes, burns and other mild skin infections. Polysporin works by slowing down or stopping the growth of bacteria in the wound for faster healing and preventing further complications.

For treatment of anal fissure, clean the affected area and dry before applying a small amount of Polysporin. Do not apply too much. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Too much application of this product can lead to burning, irritation or redness, but these side effects rarely happen. Majority of those who used this medication had little to no side effects.

Polysporin is available in ointment and powdered form, both of which are applied topically in the affected area. Polysporin is widely known in Canada and offers a wide array of healing solutions for eczema, swimmer’s ear, cold sores, pink eye and dry lips. Polysporin also helps reduce the appearance of scarring with its Cel-Activ moisturization technology. Its active ingredients are Bacitracin and Polymixin with occasional Gramicidin and Garamycin.

Just like Polysporin, Neosporin is also an antibiotic product for treatment of wounds, minor cuts, scratches and burns. It speeds up healing by preventing the growth of bacteria on the skin. This product is for external use only and should not be used near the mouth, eyes or any mucus membranes.

Neosporin is better known in the US as an antibiotic product for preventing the risk of bacterial infection in wounds scrapes and burns. Its active ingredients are Neomycin Sulfate, Bacitracin Zinc and Polymixin B. It also contains Vitamin E to help reduce the formation of scars.

Although there were no known adverse side effects of Neosporin, contact your doctor immediately if you experience any rashes, hives, burning sensation, pain or itching.

For anal fissure, it is important to clean and dry the affected area before every application. Use soft, cotton clothing to reduce moisture and tension due to rubbing.

Both products are manufactured under Johnson & Johnson for the treatment of minor wounds, scrapes, burns, eczema and other mild skin problems. They are both antibacterial products that prevent the growth of bacteria for faster healing of wounds and reduce the risk of infection.

If you are allergic to Neomycin, you can opt for Polymixin and vice versa. You may have a hard time finding Neosporin in Canada as it is better marketed in the US. Polysporin, on the other hand, is widely used in Canada, with different variants. Both products help reduce pain and minimize the appearance of scars. Due to their antibacterial properties, hundreds of people have sought these products to relieve pain and fast track healing of anal fissures.
