Popularly ingrained in people’s minds as lining up the streets of southern California, the saw palmetto fan palm produces a medically useful extract that may be simply called saw palmetto or Sabal. Unlike many other herbs, the saw palmetto has medically proven and accepted capabilities, especially in how it is used to treat swollen prostrates. The medicinal extract used to treat UTI, testicular inflammation, asthma, coughs, and more, is derived from the purple berries that the palm plant produces. Though many remember its palm leaves better, the saw palmetto also births royal-colored fruits that are considered to be secret weapons in the fight against various ailments. However, it’s still necessary to know just how effective it can be with anal fissures.
What can saw palmetto do?
The saw palmetto has been used to cure respiratory illnesses, such as coughs, colds, chronic bronchitis, and asthma. It has also been tested to have capabilities in treating common complaints, such as migraine headaches. Still, it is the prostate treatment that made the plant popular because of its potential to prevent prostate cancer. Unfortunately, despite the enthusiasm of some herbalists, the saw palmetto’s effects on swollen prostates are inconsistent. Some medical experts even theorize that perhaps the use of the medicinal plant may even mask the worsening condition of the prostate gland. The swollen prostate may appear to have been getting better even when it is simply masking a worsening condition.
Can you use the saw palmetto (serenoa repens) to treat anal fissure?
Saw palmetto is more recognized for its probable capability to treat respiratory diseases and various inflammations. It is not normally mentioned in discussions about anal fissures, however, even though anal fissures may have inflammation as a symptom.
So, should you attempt to use saw palmetto (serenoa repens) to treat anal fissure just because it can treat other inflammations? The answer is “no” if it would be ingested.
The plant is not poisonous, but as an ingested medication, the saw palmetto is powerless in solving the anal fissure problem and could even contribute to the worsening of the condition.
Again, data may not be sufficient but cases in which the Sabal plant has caused diarrhea and/or constipation in patients are hardly isolated. Anal tears would only get worse if the patient constantly has to strain when passing a stool or would get irritated if the patient is suffering from diarrhea.
However, there might be a way in which the saw palmetto can still aid anal tear sufferers. Extracts from the fruit may be safely applied near the rectum or on the affected area to serve as an antiseptic. The application helps in killing off bacteria that could aggravate the condition of the skin and prevent the healing of the anal tear.
Saw palmetto is not the best medicinal plant to cure tears near the anal sphincter. When taken by mouth, it can even make the condition worse. However, it can help speed recovery if applied topically to soothe and kill the bacteria on the affected area.
