Bitter orange is a hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus mandarin). It has many names such as Seville orange, sour orange, brigade orange and marmalade orange, all of which refer to a citrus tree and its fruit. It is found in most of the parts of the world. The peel of the fruit, the flower, leaf, and fruit juice can be used as a medicine.
The oil (extracted from the fruit’s peel), is effective on the skin that suffers from fungal infections. Meanwhile, the peel is not only used for improving appetite but on weight loss as well. The [peel] can be used to treat eyelid and lining inflammation or swelling. It also helps in treating retina bleeding, relieving exhaustion from colds, muscular pain, nerve pain, bed sores and even swelling of the veins.
Bitter orange is composed of many chemicals that affect a person’s nervous system. Depending on the part of the plant used, the effects of these chemicals vary. Some of these effects are increased blood pressure and heartbeat, and tightening of blood vessels.
The flower from the bitter orange and its oil are used to cure gastrointestinal disorders like ulcers, diarrhea and constipation, blood in stools, intestinal gas and drooping anus. Hence, one can use bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) to treat anal fissure.
Anal fissure can be characterized by the split or crack in the anal tissue. Its common causes include constipation, diarrhea, trauma from childbirth and insertion of foreign objects in the anal. One experiences anal fissure when there is pain before, during and after bowel movement; blood on the tissue (can also be found on stools); and irritation in the anus. All of which can be cured by using bitter orange flower and oil.
How does bitter orange treat anal fissure?
The oil extracted from the plant can be classified into two types: the petitgrain (oil from bitter orange leaves) and neroli (oil from the flowers). Petitgrain is considered an aphrodisiac (stimulates sexual desire) and neroli is mainly used for perfumes but can act as anti-depressant (invokes feeling of joy), antiseptic (protects wounds from infections and tetanus), bactericidal (kills bacteria), cordial (keeps body warm when having coughs and colds), disinfectant, antispasmodic (treats spasms), emollient (takes care of the skin), sedative (acts as a relaxant), digestive (increases appetite) and tonic (helps correct metabolism and boosts immune system).
One of the causes of anal fissure is spasms, caused by chronic constipation and diarrhea, in the muscles surrounding the anus (anal sphincter). Since bitter orange has the capacity to treat spasm (because it is antispasmodic in nature), it is one of the best way to remedy anal fissure. To avoid constipation and diarrhea, bitter orange is also used because of its tonic properties.
Caution: Many bitter orange supplements have been associated with many serious side effects and deaths. It is advised to consult doctors first before using bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) to treat anal fissure and other ailments. People who are suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, and heart diseases should be wary of using bitter orange.
